Ford & Domino's Take the First Steps Toward Self-Delivering Pizzas

As auto-industry leaders pave the way toward a future driven by autonomous cars, many people are asking, "what will self-driving cars be used for?"

Luxury brands will seduce your senses with carefully-crafted messages about relaxation, while the vehicle takes care of the stressful commute for you. But the rest of us know there must be a practical use for self-driving cars, beyond personal indulgence.

Ford Motor Company and Domino's Pizza are both on the same page in that respect.

This month, randomly-selected Domino's customers will be receiving their deliveries in a driverless Ford Fusion Hybrid. Both companies will be carefully monitoring the way people interact with these delivery robots, compared with a human driver.

"The majority of our questions are about the last 50 feet of the delivery experience," said Russell Weiner, president of Domino’s USA. "For instance, how will customers react to coming outside to get their food? We need to make sure the interface is clear and simple. We need to understand if a customer's experience is different if the car is parked in the driveway versus next to the curb. All of our testing research is focused on our goal to someday make deliveries with self-driving vehicles as seamless and customer-friendly as possible."
